The students were gold medallists in UW's Canadian Computing Competition as was Patrick Lam, of Marianopolis College in Montreal, who has been named first alternate. Should one of the others be unable to attend the Olympiad, he would be the replacement.
Silver medallists in the competition were: Sam Hasinoff, St. John's Ravenscourt School, Winnipeg; Michael Karczmarek, Vaughan Secondary School, Thornhill, Ont.; Chak Ming Li, Markville Secondary School, Markham, Ont.; Jed Liu, Upper Canada College, Toronto; and Eddie Maste, Pickering High School, Ajax, Ont.
Canada will compete for the first time in the Olympiad, hosted by Hungary in VeszprŽm from July 25 to Aug. 1. The Olympiad is an annual competition in the discipline of informatics (computing science) for senior pupils at secondary schools around the world.
The 20 students who competed at UW were selected from more than 1,000 who took part in the first-stage competition in March, said UW Prof. Jo Ebergen, computer science.
