UW launches part-time program for business leaders

WATERLOO, Ont. -- A new part-time Master of Business, Entrepreneurship and Technology program called "MBET at Distance" has been launched by the University of Waterloo's Centre for Business, Entrepreneurship and Technology (CBET).

The program combines online distance education with face-to-face, personal interaction. Unlike other distance programs, MBET at Distance is being established as a series of separate but also linked "Chapters" designed to encourage learning, increase idea exchange and promote community interaction.

Similar to the on-campus MBET program, MBET at Distance provides aspiring business leaders with the practical experience, tailored business capabilities and network of stakeholders required to successfully commercialize new ventures within technology-based organizations.

"With MBET at Distance, we will offer the same 'learning-doing' educational experience, but on a part-time basis, allowing participants to balance educational commitments with business responsibilities," said Prof. Howard Armitage, CBET Director.

Weekend workshops are a key component of the program and allow participants to experience the practical application of theory, meet guest speakers and outside experts, and build networks and communities.

The first Chapter will be based in Kitchener-Waterloo and will be home to students in K-W, Cambridge, Guelph, Toronto and London. Future chapters in Canada, North America and around the world are planned.

MBET at Distance is a three-year program of business studies, workshops and a commercialization practicum, requiring a weekly commitment of about 15 hours per week. To make the workload manageable for participants, breaks have been built into the curriculum during July and August every year.
