Maclean's recognizes Waterloo's reputation in university ranking

WATERLOO, Ont. (Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009) - Maclean's magazine has once again confirmed the University of Waterloo's reputation as the most innovative and the best at producing future leaders, and ultimately the best overall.

Waterloo has again finished first in three of the four reputation categories in the annual Maclean's rankings of Canadian universities. It ranked second behind McGill University in the subcategory that measures Highest Quality, and first in categories ranking Leaders of Tomorrow and Best Overall. And, for the 18th year in a row, Waterloo was named Most Innovative.

"The University of Waterloo is gratified to find that we are again being recognized in the categories that measure our reputation for innovation and leadership, and how we do overall," said David Johnston, president of Waterloo. "That the assessment comes from a wide sampling of academic, corporate and other leaders makes it all the more meaningful."

Waterloo also maintained its first place ranking, amongst comprehensive universities, in two student-related categories. It ranked first in the Student Award category, which measures the national and international awards students have won over a five-year period. The university also finished first institutions in Scholarships and Bursaries.

Waterloo finished second among comprehensive universities in Awards Per Full-Time Faculty as well as Social Sciences and Humanities Grants. It finished third for Medical/Science Grants to faculty and Total Research Dollars.

"Our faculty and students are to be commended for their tremendous successes," said Feridun Hamdullahpur, provost and vice-president academic at Waterloo. "These top-place finishes are due to the quality of their efforts, and to the university's uncompromising commitment to excellence and student success."

Waterloo ranked third overall in the comprehensive category, behind British Columbia's Simon Fraser University and the University of Victoria.
